| What can someone do to reduce the risk of getting or passing on HIV from oral sex?
Information given in the Use your Head campaign produced by THT for gay men gave the following key pieces of information to gay men:
We believe that most men who have been infected with HIV through oral sex got cum in their mouths. There seems to be little difference between spitting or swallowing.
Throat infections, including those caused by sexually transmitted infections, increase the risk of getting HIV through oral sex.
A healthy mouth reduces the risk of getting HIV through oral sex. Bleeding gums, brushing teeth before sex or mouths ulcers increase the risk.
A high viral load can increase the risk of passing on HIV through oral sex, especially if a man with HIV cums into the mouth of an uninfected man.
